David Laidlaw

I have been working within the Creative Industries since leaving school. My first job was creating architectural and technical drawings on an A0 drawing board for Edinburgh Council, but I was enticed into the world of Graphic Design in my late teens.

After spending several years travelling the globe, visiting most of Western Europe, the Middle East, West and South-East Asia and Australia, I settled in Munich, Germany. Here I learnt the German language, as well as how to produce graphics using an Apple Mac computer and the relevant Adobe Creative Suite software. I set up my own freelance Graphic Design business, calling my business "STARS Grafix", and I produced a wide range of graphics, ranging from editorial design for magazines, books and brochures, to corporate identity packages for various businesses around the world, packaging and advertising for various wine producers and food supplements, vector graphics for vehicle livery, as well as promotional materials such as flyers, posters, web-banners and animated promotional videos for events in and around the German state of Bavaria.

After spending 20 years living and working in Bavaria, I returned to my hometown of Edinburgh in Scotland, where I partook in a course of further education at Edinburgh College, adding to my graphic skills with presentation skills, web and mobile based graphics as well as honing my illustrative skills, and I graduated in the summer of 2014 with a Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design & Digital Communication.

I am an avid writer of Blogs about graphic design and travel stories, and I recently produced my own book of travel tales, titled "By Rule Of Thumb", which I hope to get published soon, as well as writing and designing a magazine about the technicalities of printing in a digital world and an insight into the creative industries.
